Old Worn Shingles |
Determining whether or not you have storm damage or if you
are just looking at a worn and tattered roof can take an experienced eye. There
are however a few things you can look at yourself to determine who you may want
to call first your friendly roofing contractor or your insurance company.
Some basic things to look for,
1.
You notice curling shingles
Whether your shingles are curling at the edges
(known as cupping) or the middle is beginning to raise (known as clawing),
you’ll probably have to have a new roof installed within a few years.
2. You’re missing shingles
If you have quite a few missing shingles and your
roof will start looking like a patchwork quilt, it might be time to think about
redoing your whole roof.
3. Shingles are cracked or significant amounts of granules are missing
If your roof is older than 10 years and you start to notice a lot of asphalt granules in your gutters, it means they’re deteriorating quickly.
Hail damage is uniquely different
and is easily detected by an experienced eye. Hail
damage accounts for a lot of the damage to roofs for hail storms in the upper
Midwest. Roofing systems must be physically inspected by someone who has
training and experience to determine if there is actual hail damage. Hail damage will typically dent the soft metals on your roof (i.e. vents, exhaust caps)
before it damages your
shingles. So check the vinyl trim around your windows and the flashing on
the roof.

Hail Damage Visual Inspection |
The slope or pitch of your roof and the direction of the
storm may result in hail damage to one side of your roof and not the other.
Perpendicular impacts will cause the most damage.
There are many variables in looking for hail damage. The
type or roof you have is going to be key as well. Some roofing types damage
more easily than others. Asphalt shingles are pretty resilient, wood shakes
depending on the materials they are made from can offer some good protection.
Metal roofs offer good protection as well. It really depends on the severity of
the storm. Larger hail that falls for prolonged times have the potential for
more damage than a short burst storm, but don’t let that fool you even minor
hail storms can cause damage.
If you suspect you have damage from hail or even if yourroof is looking old, stained, or just like it’s about to go contact J and B Roofing a reliable roofing contractor that

on budget.
