When it’s time to replace the siding on
your home, you can become overwhelmed by the choices. Popular options
include stone veneer, fiber cement, engineered wood siding and vinyl siding. Siding choices run the gamut as far as prices and there are pros and cons for each option.
While stone veneer is extremely durable, it will easily have you
spending $10-$17 a square foot. Fiber cement siding is comparatively
less expensive but usually requires repainting. Engineered wood siding,
or composite wood, is composed of wood products and other materials.
Like wood board siding, it will require regular maintenance as well as
repainting every five to ten years.
Vinyl siding comes in many styles and is virtually maintenance
free.  While it is often a less expensive option, homeowners have their
home wrapped in a material that won’t rot, peel, or warp. The
maintenance for vinyl siding consists of spraying off once a year with a
garden hose if needed. It does not require painting or other yearly
maintenance tasks.  Many of today’s better quality vinyl siding choices
are backed with insulation and include an additional layer of
water-resistant material behind the siding. This not only protects the
exterior walls and provides better impact resistance, insulated vinyl
siding also blocks more outside noise from being heard inside the home.
Finally, when considering siding options, take a look at the
manufacturer’s warranty. Many materials, like engineered wood, typically
have limited warranties.  Stucco, stone, and brick should last for the
life of the home, but that comes with a higher purchase price.
