Saint Paul, MN Siding Professionals

When it’s time to replace the siding on your home, you can become overwhelmed by the choices. Popular options include stone veneer, fiber cement, engineered wood siding and vinyl siding. Siding choices run the gamut as far as prices and there are pros and cons for each option.
While stone veneer is extremely durable, it will easily have you spending $10-$17 a square foot. Fiber cement siding is comparatively less expensive but usually requires repainting. Engineered wood siding, or composite wood, is composed of wood products and other materials.  Like wood board siding, it will require regular maintenance as well as repainting every five to ten years.
Vinyl siding comes in many styles and is virtually maintenance free.  While it is often a less expensive option, homeowners have their home wrapped in a material that won’t rot, peel, or warp. The maintenance for vinyl siding consists of spraying off once a year with a garden hose if needed. It does not require painting or other yearly maintenance tasks.  Many of today’s better quality vinyl siding choices are backed with insulation and include an additional layer of water-resistant material behind the siding. This not only protects the exterior walls and provides better impact resistance, insulated vinyl siding also blocks more outside noise from being heard inside the home.
Finally, when considering siding options, take a look at the manufacturer’s warranty. Many materials, like engineered wood, typically have limited warranties.  Stucco, stone, and brick should last for the life of the home, but that comes with a higher purchase price.
And ask around – see what your neighbors have on their homes. Ask them what they like and don’t like about it, the required maintenance, and any problems with durability. If they’re pleased with their siding, find out who the manufacturer is and who performed the installation. Asking for recommendations can give you a great list of material choices and companies to start researching.

How to File an Insurance Claim for your Roof

mayfest_2

First, you need to write the date of the storm, and if is possible to take pictures of the damage. It is important to save this information, so you can show to your insurance agent.

Second, you need to call a roofing company and get a free estimate to confirm that you have hail damage on your roof or siding of your house. Always choose a local contractor because after the work is done, if you have a leak on your roof, they have warranty and they will come back to fix it.

Third, read your policy and state regulations and make sure that your policy will cover this claim.

It is illegal for an insurance company to cancel your policy due to a weather event.

Fourth, File your claim to the insurance company. After the claim is made, the company will send an adjuster  to check on your damage. It is better if you have a representative from the roofing company you choose, so they compare notes and make sure that you will get what you deserve to fix you roof and leave as it was before the storm.

Fifth, After your claim has been approved, the company will send you a check for the amount they approved without the deductible. Complete the works soon as possible. Most of the companies offer you a referral fee after completing the work. If they did a great job, refer them to your friends and colleauges. They will pay you for this.

How Do I Hire a Roofer in St Paul, Mn?

When it comes time to replace your roof, how do you go about selecting a roofer?  Let me give you my two cents’ worth on the things that you might want to consider.

1)    Insurance – General liability and commercial vehicle insurance are absolute minimums.
Umbrella liability and workers’ compensation are two other items you may see on the certificate. Check the insurance certificate; you would not believe how few customers ask to see our insurance certificate.  I would almost guarantee none have actually called the contact phone number listed to confirm coverage.  Many roofers use old certificates, or worse, falsified certificates.

2)    Better Business Bureau Rating – Never select a roofer with less than an “A” rating.
Read the BBB page for customer comments and complaints.   Are the complaints resolved or unresolved?  This is something you will want to know.

4)    Warranty – The labor warranty should never be less than five years.
Take some time to understand the material warranty.  There is a major difference between a limited manufacturer’s warranty and the warranty a certified installer can provide.  As GAF Certified Installers, we provide GAF’s System Plus Warranty, which is MUCH better than the limited manufacturer’s warranty.  The System Plus Warranty will be explained completely in another blog post.

5)    On-line References – Take these with a grain of salt because some companies might have their family write the first few reviews.
Once you see more than five reviews, you can start putting stock in what they say.  Does one bad review make a bad company? No.  Realize mistakes happen.  If you can, find out what the company did to resolve the issue.

6)    Word of Mouth – This one comes last because it is the best qualification, assuming that the other qualifications have been met. “My neighbor’s does roofing” is great, but only if they have insurance, a good BBB rating, certification and references. The roofing company’s liability insurance covers your property from damage done by any person or equipment brought to the site to get your project finished, including the sub-contractors.  A better question is:  “How long have you worked with your crews?” This is much more important than how we pay them.

Like I said earlier, this is just my two cents’ worth, but I think you will find it reasonable.  Subsequent blog posts will cover everything about roofing that we can think of, If there is something you have questions on or a roofing topic you would like to see a little more information on, please let me know.  I’m here to help you make an as informed decision as possible when it comes to your St Paul, MN roofing needs.
